Gather information on all your options to begin with, and then strike those options that don't fit in with your preference, price range or lifestyle.
As you look at your face in the mirror, the things you don't like about what you see practically leap out at you. Sometimes, it's the things that age you the most that are the most difficult to look at because they seem to get worse with each passing day.
Instead of wanting to cry every time you see a new line, wrinkle or gray hair, let's talk about solutions to your biggest aging concerns.
The wrinkles that tend to form around your mouth are unattractive and they age you. Why do you get them?
Because as we age, our skin loses elasticity due to the declining amount of collagen your body produces over the years. Collagen is basically the "glue" that holds together the tightly-formed fibers and muscles directly underneath your skin. With the loss of collagen or your “glue,” the tightly-woven framework of muscles and fibers begin to give way and loosen, causing the skin to sag, droop and wrinkle.
Specifically in the lip area, after years and years of smiling, frowning, drinking, smoking and sun damage, just to name a few things, lines and
wrinkles really take their hold here.
You have several options when it comes to diminishing the appearance of or eliminating these lines around the mouth.
You can try dermabrasion, chemical peels, laser resurfacing or dermal fillers. All of these things require application by a doctor, who is licensed, certified and qualified to do this type of work.
Dermabrasion will remove the top layer of skin. You may experience some pain, irritation and swelling, but once the skin heals, the new skin that grows in its place will be smoother.
Chemical peels also strip away the surface layer of skin so depending on the depth of your peel, can also result in some pain, irritation and tenderness. The damaged surface layer of skin is chemically removed and new, younger-looking skin will grow back in its place.
Dermal fillers can be injected into the wrinkled areas to fill and plump the skin. The fillers plump up the “craters”or wrinkles to eliminate the lines around the mouth. The effects of the fillers can last for several months, but needs to be repeated.
As for laser resurfacing, there are different effects of this procedure for different results you want. For instance, the laser burns off the surface skin a bit at a time. You will need a series of several laser treatments to see the results.
Some laser treatments simply burn off the skin for new skin to replace
it, and other treatments are used to stimulate the underlying tissue to
encourage more collagen to be produced, thereby improving overall elasticity and reducing lip wrinkles.
If you're not into removing layers of skin by laser or chemical peel, or injecting fillers into the skin, there are other more natural methods you can try.
For starters, start drinking more water because water is a natural means to plump and hydrate the skin. Water can also remove toxins and impurities in the cells underneath your skin for enhanced clarity and a more healthy-looking complexion. Throw in a lemon, lime or slices of watermelon to make it taste more yummy.
Use a good collagen building cream daily to keep the skin moist and hydrated. Dry skin becomes wrinkled very easily.
To stimulate the muscles under your skin, do some facial exercises specifically targeted at the lip area. By working these muscles, you can
naturally stimulate collagen production and see the benefits of using facial
exercises to strengthen the underlying fibers that hold skin together, giving you a tighter framework underneath and smoothing out the wrinkles around the mouth on the surface.
Again, the type of treatment you use will boil down to how much pain you are willing to tolerate, how much time and money you are willing to spend to get the results you want, and how all of this will fit into your lifestyle (like recovery and downtime).
Be smart about your decision because the long-term effects it will have on your health and results on your face are the most important factors for consideration.
